Surviving four consecutive one-run decisions to claim the recent Culver City Senior Softball League title, BrokButcher.com manager Gary Butcher said his team will need the same luck if it hopes to repeat its good fortune in the new season.

“Every game could have gone either way,” said Butcher, a former Los Angeles Angels professional baseball player. His team of primarily 60- and 70-year-old men and women represent all walks of life.

“I can’t tell you how we were able to hang on.

“I had a good feeling for this team right from the start,” Butcher said.

“They love and they show passion for the game.”

Butcher’s team started the season 8-2, faded, and later picked up key victories to reach the playoffs in the league of evenly matched teams.

Men, ages 55 and older, and women, 45 and up, of all abilities play Sundays, 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Veterans Park.

The i parity league sponsored by the Culver City Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, providing opportunities for players to have fun playing a game they love and making new friends.

“We’re pleased to provide leisure activities such as this thriving league that supports fitness, camaraderie and well-being for our senior population,” said Recreation Supervisor Dan Jassim.

Games are free to watch, and seniors of all skill levels are invited to be placed on the pool list to substitute for absent players.

“Everyone hits, runs, fields, throws and jokes around as if the clock has been turned back to our younger days,” said league commissioner Rich Jebejian.
