I Can Taste a New Hobby Coming on

Let’s talk about Fudgsicles.

If you’re as old as I am, you probably ate fudgsicles when you were a kid. How about Creamsicles? How about Good Humor ice cream? How about Bungalow bar?

Fudgsicles appeared in 1946, when I was six years old. I must have eaten them  until beginning high school eight years later.

How did fudgsicles come back into my life after 55 years?

Two months ago, my wife, in an effort to cut down on after-dinner eating, bought a pack of low-calorie flavored ice pops.  I was happy to see her eating those pops after dinner while we watched television.  From time to time, I also indulged in ice-pop eating.

Last week while shopping with my wife at Target, we headed for the ice pop area.  There it was.

I certainly had seen them before.

This time it hit me.  Fudgsicles.  If she enjoyed ice pops at night, why couldn’t I enjoy my old favorite, fudgsicles?

A done deed.

I bought a box of them.

Would they be as delicious as ever?

The taste was just as I remembered — except now they were skinny like popsicles.

As I see it, there are two ways to eat fudgsicles.  One way is to take bites off the top.  The other way is to suck on the fudgsicle.

I have been doing both.

I have not decided which is more flavorful or enjoyable.

I will try to limit myself to two fudgsicle pops a night.  At 40 calories a pop, that’s only 80 calories a night.  And the fudgsicles seem to satisfy me as much as a bowl of reduced-fat ice cream.

To enjoy the full creaminess of the fudgsicle, I let them sit for a while outside of the freezer.  I think I will experiment with different OOFTs – Outside of Freezer Times.

What will be the monthly cost for my new fudgsicle hobby?  A box of 40 pops costs $4.

Eating two pops a night for a month, I will consume one-and-a-half boxes of pops.  Six dollars a month will be my fudgsicle budget.  Not bad.

Will it keep me from further eating after dinner?  I hope so.  I am not so much concerned with my weight as I am with the need to wait at least three hours after a meal before lying down.

Since I do not consider the fudgsicles to be a meal, I should be fine.

What do you do to fight the craving for after-dinner eating?  Are you able to eat fewer than 80 calories after dinner?

I am so happy that Good Humor Toasted Almond ice cream bars are not available in Los Angeles.

Those 240-calorie bars are the only things better than fudgsicles.

Hmm – I wonder if I can make my own fudgsicles?  I taste a new hobby coming.
