Re: “Roamin’ About for Cause of Roman Ticket”

Cases of wrongly issued parking citations for alleged violations on street sweeping days are rare in Culver City, says Public Works Director Charles Herbertson.

Last week one Josie Roman had her erroneously issue parking ticket erased three weeks later when it was determined the sign based on the ticket listed the wrong day.

“This not only does not happen very often,” he said, “I can’t think of another case. I would not say we never have made a mistake with a sign.

“Every once in awhile we do. Usually, though, it’s not the day that is wrong. The hours on maybe one sign don’t get changed.

“We are pretty good, though, normally. There are a lot of signs out there,” Mr. Herbertson said.

“If you look at all of the signs that we maintain – street sweeping signs, street signs, stop signs, speed limit signs, parking restriction signs. It goes on and on, thousands of them.”

Ms. Roman was cited for a 5 a.m. street sweeping violation, a relatively rare hour.

“We have some areas where we sweep early, usually commercial areas,” Mr. Herbertson said. “The reason is, we want to get in there and sweep before the businesses start their day so we don’t impact their parking in the morning.

“Residential areas, on the other hand, usually are swept during the day. That works well because most residents get up in the morning and go to work. So their car is gone anyway.”
