Re: “Mielke: Unfair Edges for Charter Schools” 

With a summertime fiscal scandal at El Camino Rea Charter High School in the Valley still echoing in his ears, David Mielke planted and stated a resounding favorite theme.

“Here is one of the many problems with charter schools,” said the Teachers Union president.

Speaking slowly to increase hs emphasis, “They are free from public oversight.

“Who ever thought that would be a good idea?

“Let’s give all this public money to a bunch of guys who are going to run a school. They will pay themselves whatever the heck they want. And they won’t have to be accountable for it.

“That,” concluded Mr. Mielke in his sourest tone, “will really help our kids.”

Changing voices, the Teachers Union leader said, “No, I want public education that is there for everybody. And I want the public to have some oversight over what they are paying Dave Mielke and what they are paying Josh Arnold.”

Children from poor families are shut out from charter schools, Mr. Mielke maintains, “because such parents tend to be less savvy. They may not be English-speakers

“Oh, gosh,” he said. “Some charter schools have their signup dates on a Tuesday afternoon out in the Valley when most people are working.”
