First in a series.

The challenge is a daunting as climbing up a tall building with one hand tied behind:

How do you sell reserve water to people who believe they have enough stored to almost drown two elephants simultaneously?

That is the assignment for community leader Ira Diamond and Christine Parra, emergency services coordinator for the Fire Dept.

They are the point persons for Culver City’s Water First program.

National Preparedness Month begins next week – as in being prepared for a disaster.

For the second time this year, Ms. Parra and Mr. Diamond are hoping to sell a significant number of 55-gallon water containers – at a discounted price — to put away for the day when a disaster may unexpectedly strike and water suddenly becomes unavailable.

They seek to convince residents to make the same kind of preparation deposit that people make at their banks.

“Water is arguably the most important part of a household’s disaster survival project,” Mr. Diamond said.

“People only can survive days without water – but much longer without food.”

More than 80 residents signed up for storage units last spring, and Ms. Parra and Mr. Diamond hope to improve on that figure in September.
