Fifty-nine Years Ago
The trial of suspected Communist spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg on charges of espionage began on March 6, 1951. They were tried along with Morton Sobell, who tried to escape prosecution by fleeing the country. Sobell allegedly was kidnapped by Mexican secret police and driven to the U.S. border where he was arrested by American authorities.
The Rosenbergs were executed 27 months later, on June 19, 1953. Their trial has been a source of historic controversy ever since. Recently decoded Soviet cables suggest Mr. Rosenberg was a recruiter and courier while casting doubt on how much Mrs. Rosenberg actually knew.
The Grand Jury testimony of 36 of the 46 witnesses at the Rosebergs' trial was released in 2008 over the objections of Mrs. Rosenberg’s brother. ...read
