Brentwood residents say a massive campus building project planned by the Archer School for Girls will seriously worsen the gridlock on a 1.2 mile strip of Sunset Boulevard.

Already it is one of the worst traffic chokepoints in Los Angeles, and the new project poses possible health risks for neighbors and students alike during its three-year-long construction phase, residents have asserted.

The project has sharply divided Brentwood.

The vast majority of residents opposing the magnitude of Archer’s expansion plan, involving nearly a quarter million square feet of construction, on a historic property on Sunset.

But the elite girls’ school, with 500 students, has spent millions on lobbyists and lawyers to get its way at City Hall.

A vote is scheduled next Tuesday on Archer’s controversial plan.

Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin recently announced a compromise had been reached between Archer and its neighbors over the project.

But critics and homeowner leaders say the so-called compromise was developed behind closed doors by a handful of residents. Opponents say the perceived agreement only insignificantly reduces the size and environmental impacts of the Archer project.

A story about the controversy was published Monday in CityWatch Today, a site of news about Los Angeles.
