On the heels of Gov. Brown’s Executive Order announcing statewide mandatory water restrictions, students at Culver City High School are demonstrating that they are doing their part to conserve water during one of California’s most historic droughts to date.

On Monday at 12:30, West Basin Municipal Water District Director Scott A. Houston and Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Culver High, showcasing the Water District’s newest Ocean Friendly Garden.

This 2,332-square foot sustainable garden features several swales, and it is designed to capture 1,166 gallons of rainwater – hugely helping in this time of drought.

Located at the Robert Frost Auditorium on campus, this garden captures a large volume of rainwater from the roof for natural garden infiltration.

Also incorporated into the design was boulder seating under the trees and concrete pads for guests to walk through during intermissions at the auditorium.

Drought-tolerant plants were installed by the students themselves during a hands-on workshop held in December.
