With one eye on funds from the school improvements bond measure, School Board member Sue Robins, speaking as a former teacher, is anxious for comprehensive upgrades to science facilities throughout the School District.

“Outdated” is her succinct description.

“They were built for 24 to 26 students,” Ms. Robins said, “and frankly that is just not the reality right now.

“Most classes have at least 30 kids. They are kind of cramped because the facilities will not accommodate the kind of work students have to do in a science laboratory nowadays.”

The former Middle School teacher, now a progressive businesswoman, said that “a lot of science that used to be taught in college now is taught at the high school level.

“Demands on the teacher, demands on the facilities are significantly different from what they were even 20 years ago,” Ms. Robins said.

“That is what we are trying to update.”
