She who brought class, spunk, energy and glamour to the School Board, will not return.

“I am not going to run for re-election in November,” Laura Chardiet said this morning.

No mystery or hedging about the reason for not pursuing a second term.

She is leading an entirely different life now.

“When I ran the first time, I wasn’t a single mom,” she said. “I am a single mom now.”

Her daily schedule has developed a logjam since her divorce.

Ms. Chardiet’s absence likely means two School Board seats will be available for the vote in four months.

When she won four years ago, Nancy Goldberg, currently the Board president, said that she would be a one-termer because she would be past 80 by the end of a second term.

With these two seats open, candidates who were uncertain may be lured to the race.

The hour is getting late.

By this time four years ago, Ms. Chardiet was running hard.
