“I have said from the very beginning,” he declared in stentorian tones, “that we need to extend term limits to another term.”
Through his first seven years on the City Council, Mr. O’Leary has been eager to serve on committees that directly work with government agencies.

For that reason, “I probably am the best reason why term limits should be extended,” he said.

“In my position as a representative of the League of California Cities and Independent Cities Assn.,” said Mr. O’Leary, “I will get to the rank of vice president of both.
“Then I will have to step down and miss out on the opportunity for Culver City to preside over both of those organizations at the local level.”

The vice mayor – who expects to be elevated to mayor in two months – said that “presiding is pretty prestigious and can bring some benefits. You are running and meetings and dictating the policy, or direction, for the next year.”
