If you find yourself going through comics-withdrawal between Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con this weekend and the cinema release of Dr. Strange, Fear Not, West Los Angeles College is swooping in to the rescue.

The “Kaboom: Comic Art” show will open in the college gallery on Thursday and run through Dec, 12. The public is invited to Thursday’s reception from 5 o’clock to 8. Parking is available for $2 in the adjacent parking structure

Kaboom will feature the works of Robert L. Williams, Mark Kostabi, Chick Bragg and Walter Robinson.

Mr. Williams was one of the group of artists who produced the underground youth counterculture comic series Zap Comix. His work also helped to create the genre of psychedelic imagery.

Mr. Kostabi was a prominent figure of the East Village art scene. In addition to his striking paintings, he designed album covers for Guns ‘N’ Roses and the Romones among others.

Mr. Bragg’s work has been featured on U.S. postage stamps, in the Los Angeles Zoo and by the World Wildlife Fund. Mr. Robinson has been profiled as an artist on numerous television shows including the Oprah Winfrey Show.  As an art critic, he is credited with coining the term that became popular in the last few years, “Zombie Formalism.”

Other featured artists include Mike Callas, Doug Harvey, Izzy Howell, and Nick Reinman.

The exhibit is curated by art dealer, curator and radio personality Molly Barnes.

Ms. Barnes is currently an artist in residence at West. In addition to sharing her wealth of experience and knowledge with the college’s aspiring artists, she coordinates free exhibits and lectures which are open to the public.
