Two Unorthodox Notions

Mr. Clarke

In addition to a high-profile term as mayor of Culver City during the Centennial Year that starts in 60 days, ambitious Jim Clarke has circled two other objectives in red.

  • Strategic planning weekend getaway retreats for City Council members.
  • Community-type meetings on a single subject worthy of a greater airing than a few late-night minutes at a City Council meeting.

“When meaty subjects come up,” said Mr. Clarke, “we need more than 20 minutes at a late-night meeting to talk about them.

“I want to have Council-convened meetings (open to the public) where we bring in specialists from the outside who can add value to a discussion on one subject.”

Mr. Clarke said the tailored sessions will not be in the “wide-open” tradition of town hall sessions, more like listen and learn.

“Kind of a brainstorming session,” Mr. Clarke said, “with people who understand our community and may bring a different perspective.
