Cops Can’t Win

Dateline Dayton — I have been told some of my essays are depressing. I agree.

I am disappointed that so often I must write about children being harmed. I wish it would stop. It will not, though, until we make a serious effort to stop to these tragedies.

Yes, I still believe licensing can help. It is not the total answer.

This week’s case is a seven-year-old boy who lives near Dayton. Standing on a street corner, he was trying to sell his stuffed teddy bear for food. A police officer, you know those terrible people who go around shooting criminals, saw him, found food for him and took him to the police station. His mother and a man living at the home were arrested for child endangerment. Three other children lived in this filthy home. Guess what? The mother is upset. She has taken to social media to vent her anger… at the police. Cops can’t win.

I don’t can’t understand the uproar over the police. There will always be the bad apple on the force. They protect us from criminals. If you are a criminal, you might get shot. There is an easy way to avoid being shot. Obey the law. Respect authority.

If parents would start teaching their children respect for authority, police killings could be eliminated. Yes, the parents will also need to learn to respect authority.

It tears me up to have this mother go on television and tell me her son was a good boy and the police had no right to shot him, even though he had just robbed a store, or was involved in some other criminal activity.

On the Lighter Side

Last Thursday, I took my 13-year-old grandson to Louisville to visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory. We had a good time, and he got a personalized bat, for show only, from the museum store.

I expected more, although that might have something to do with my age. The tour of the factory was interesting, but I thought there could be more. I am not a true fan of baseball, except for my minor league Dayton Dragons. So the museum was of little interest. But even my grandson found there wasn’t much to the museum. It was great to spend the day with Jarod, though, and learn what is going on in his life.

Speaking of the Dragons, we were at their game Friday night. So hot – the weather, not the team.

Pauline was not feeling well, so we left at the end of the fifth inning.

The Dragons were trailing 5-0, and it got worse.
We intended to be at the ballpark Sunday, but it was raining at game time. We stayed home, another first. The Dragons won.

We will be at the ballpark tonight.
