Re: “‘Fake Parking Ticket’ Is Killed”

[Editor’s Note: In a Letter to the Editor earlier this week, reader Josie Roman complained of having unfairly received a parking citation on July 8 for a street sweeping violation when parked by an incorrectly posted street sweeping sign. When the Police Dept. was contacted by the newspaper, Capt. Ron Iizuka said an error had been made and that the ticket was being rescinded. Below are two documents, the Police Dept. email and Ms. Roman’s response.]

Ms. Roman’s response:

Sgt. William Jackson,

Thank you for your review and communication.

Given the outcome, and in order to be fair and just, I trust you will be conducting a thorough investigation and reversing every similar parking ticket in the area back to the time when those conflicting signs were posted, regardless of whether the cited individuals had the time to contest the citations.

I hope you will remind your officers to make sure to write the correct address in the tickets, rather than one across the street or even further away.

Speaking of ambiguity, maybe you can explain how someone can not stop Monday through Friday, on school days between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., and at the same time park for 15 minutes during the same periods.

See photo (above). Though significant improvement has been made from the previous situation, subject to the attached article, it seems to me there is still room for clarity.

On Tuesday, police Sgt. William Jackson sent the following email:

Good morning, Ms. Roman,

My name is Sgt. Jackson, and I am the sergeant over the parking unit here in Culver City.  I recently received information regarding a parking ticket you received in our city on Wednesday, July 8, 2015.  The ticket was for a violation of street sweeping.  After reviewing the citation and the posted signs, it was discovered that the signage is not current and ambiguous.  It appears that along the side of the street you were parked, there are several signs of enforcement for Wednesdays from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.

However, there is one sign that is posted for “No Parking” from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. on “Thursdays” along that same side of the street.  As a result of your review, you were found “not liable” for the violation.  You should receive a notice in the mail to this effect in the near future.

All regulatory posted signs in the city are handled through our Public Works/Engineering Dept. A request to correct the signage has been made.

I would like to extend our apologies on behalf of the city and Police Dept. for any inconvenience this may have caused.

If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact me at 310.253.6262 or by email at William.Jackson@culvercity.org.
