Most Culver City High School students are relaxing at home during the holidays while Centaur winter athletes are playing in tournaments and pre-season games.

If they are not playing games they are practicing.  League play starts next month.  Performing well in league play means a spot in the CIF playoffs, the dream of every team.

The girls’ water polo team is 5-0 under the direction of two of the best coaches in the Los Angeles area. The father and son coaching duo of Nestor Dordoni Sr. and Nestor Jr. use a combination of experience and youthful enthusiasm to create an inspiring atmosphere for boys and girls who want to learn how to play high water polo.

Last week the girls beat Mira Costa 15-3. Their next home game is Thursday, Jan. 15, against Venice.

The girls’ basketball team travels to Las Vegas on Saturday to play Troy of  Fullerton at 12:20.  The 6-3 Centaurs are the defending CIF and Ocean League champions.

Coached by Julian Anderson, and their next home game is Wednesday, Jan. 7, 6 o’clock, against West Torrance.

The girls’ soccer team is 6-2-2, and they are coached by Scott Mair.  The Lady Centaurs lost their last game, 1-0, last week to Baldwin Park’s Sierra Vista in the Ganesha Soccer Tournament final last week.  Their next home game will be Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 3, against Palos Verdes.

The South Torrance soccer tournament was not kind to the Culver High boys’ soccer team last week.  The Centaurs entered the tournament with a 3-1-1 record. They finished with a 3-4-1 record.  Louie Espeleta’s Culver City team lost three in a row to Santa Barbara (5-0), to San Pedro (1-0) and to Buena of Ventura (1-0).  Their next home game is Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 3, against Lynwood.
