When you score 85 points in two games, it is obvious Culver City High School can score.

After dropping their opener to West Torrance 34-33, they beat Torrance 52-14 last week at Jerry Chabola Stadium.

Now the Centaurs need to find out if they can stop other good teams from finding the end zone.

The Centaurs will play North Torrance and its explosive offense Friday evening at 7 inside the Jerry Chabola Stadium on campus.

North, 2-1, has several outstanding offensive weapons, namely quarterback Glen Searcy and wide receiver Malik Welch.

Culver City has its own collection of outstanding offensive players.

“Hopefully,” said Coach Jahmal Wright, scoring 52 points against Torrance will give us momentum.

“If we expect to beat North Torrance, we need to cut down on turnovers and be more consistent in our running game.

“Our receivers are doing a good job, but we are working to get better.”

The Centaurs offense is led by junior quarterback Jonathan Martin who has thrown for 600 yards in two games. Although

One of the best players in his CIF division, Martin keeps both feet on the ground.

“We need to keep executing our assignments, to work hard, and the wins will come,” said Martin.

“Getting our first win was great, especially because it was on our home field. It’s a wonderful experience.”
Martin is getting a lot of help from receivers Kevin McGuire, Charles Ross, Robert Simon and Deven Osborne.

Running back Brandon Oum, who scored on an 87-yard run against Torrance, is another speedster Martin can rely on.

The offensive line is protecting Martin and backup quarterback Bryce Lewis- Wolfe.

The Centaurs have many young players – and outstanding young assistant coaches. One is Derrick Huezo, Sr.

Huezo works with the defensive backs and he is one of Culver City’s eye-in-the-sky coaches. He watches games from an elevated platform and relays information down to the field to help the ground coaches strategize.

Huezo, who also coaches track and basketball, knows the Centaurs need to improve if they expect to contend for f championships.

“We must be more consistent on defense,” Huezo said. “We need to make sure we hold teams to three plays and a punt.”
Veteran assistant coach Cornell Myles was excited that the entire roster got into the game.

“The players feel good about themselves, and that will help us have better practices.”

Myles described North Torrance as fast “with a lot of good athletes. They are not going to hand us a victory. We will have to earn it.”
