Recent Culver City High School graduate Jacob Weiner had two hits in four at-bats and drove in three runs last Saturday to lead his Gold team to a 15-3 win over the Blue in the second annual Westside Victory Custom Athletic All-Star Classic at West Los Angeles College.

The All-Star game showcased 40 graduating players from 28 high schools.

In Weiner’s second at bat, with the bases loaded, he drove a fastball into the gap in right center field, scoring two runners.

His third RBI came in a sacrifice fly.

Culver City graduate Nolan Martinez. Martinez was also on the Gold team, but he did not play.

He was present to root on his teammates.

Martinez recently was the 98th player chosen in the Major League Draft.
“It feels great,” said Martinez of his owb doubleheader:

“I graduated from high school and I got a call from the Yankees.

“I was happy to share these great moments with my friends that I grew up with and played Little League with. I have always wanted to play professional baseball.”

Martinez was offered a baseball scholarship to San Diego State.

Indications are, though, that he will sign with the Yankees this summer.

“It’s an honor to play for a college,” Martinez. “But I want to pursue my dream of playing professional baseball and hopefully make it to the big leagues.”

He is preparing himself.

“If baseball does not work out,” Martinez said, “I can go back to school.”

He expects soon to head for Tampa and the Yankees’ rookie camp.

“I will probably sign down there,” Martinez said. “I am not 18 yet. “One of my parents has to come down and be there when I sign.”

Both Martinez and Weiner played on an Ocean League championship team. Leaving Culver City is bittersweet for them.

“I had a great time at Culver City,” said Martinez. “We had a great team this season.”

Weiner also will be leaving California. He accepted a baseball scholarship to play for Hawaii Pacific University. “I never have been there. I am really looking forward to the experience.”

As with most young athletes, parents and coaches have been instrumental in the success of both young men. Weiner’s father Larry and mother Laura are his biggest supporters.
