Robins Explains Why Safe Zones Are Needed

Shortly after President Trump’s election, the School Board  unhesitatingly moved to declare all Culver City campuses safe zones.

Board President Sue Robins explained the reasoning in unvarnished tones:

“Our children needed to feel safe,” she said, in the wake of Mr. Trump’s campaign promise to undertake mass deportations.

“Our children and our families who come into Culver City need to feel safe. Many children are afraid that their parents wouldn’t be there after school to pick them up, that their parents wouldn’t be available to take care of them.

“A number of our other school communities,” said Ms. Robins, “feel threatened by some of the things that have been said by the (Trump administration).

“We needed to let them know they are safe.”

After a pause, the School Board president wondered what is the big deal over this development.

“In fact, we haven’t changed our policy or our practice in any way,” she said. “We are just restating it.”

Ms. Robins was asked if she had noticed signs of fear across campuses.

“Yes,” she said. “The children are afraid. They are telling their teachers they are afraid. They are talking to each other. They are talking to their teachers. They are to their parents, and they are afraid.”

Ms. Robins said she has not seen evidence the Trump administration “even wants people to feel safe.”
