Drums should be banging and trumpets should be tooting today for the classy way in which the School District, led by Supt. David LaRose, became a national model for creating a loving home for transgender students.

The work of the ethically admirable Drew Sotelo the District’s director of School and Family Support Services, has merited a prolonged bow from before the community.

In contrast to the typically shameless, mawkish, narcissistic, publicity-chasing way the Obama White House has turned transgender into a circus at the expense of fragile kids, the School District behaved in an opposite form deserving of long, loud applause and celebration.

The previously hushed-up subject of how to formulate policies for welcoming and supporting transgender children of varying stages and ages has stumped both normal and brilliant people.

Broadening the School District’s student base, without drawing attention, has been an acid test for stressed and threatened educators.

Culver City’s extraordinary exploration and implementation of complex and intensely sensitive transgender policies needs to be known.
