Re “How Condran Keeps Culver City No. 1”

As shepherd of one of the premier transportation fleets in the United States, a staggering but understated achievement for Culver City, Paul Condran, Fleet Services Manager, was explaining how his crew has maintained elite and Elite status.

“Out of 15 No. 1 fleets in the country since the program’s inception,” he said, “only four have been identified as Elite Fleets.”

Culver City is one of the four.

How do you stay No. 1?

“Throughout the year, the editor of the magazine that makes the selections and the consulting team will fire off a few questions to see how you are doing,” Mr. Condran said.

“They ask what programs we have, how are we continuing to perform at a high level.

“It’s hard.”

The national ranking specialists came to the right person. Mr. Condran, who turned 57 years old on Father’s Day, has logged more than 30 years in City Hall’s Transportation Dept. This is where his heart and soul live.

Question: How much of Mr. Condran’s leadership of his Culver City team is psychological, keeping his crew inspired, and what proportion is technological?

“The two (concepts) work hand in glove,” he said. “We appreciate and have a lot of pride in the achievements we have made.”

The walls surrounding Mr. Condran’s office down Duquesne Avenue, near Jefferson Boulevard, are lavishly decorated with banners reminding the Fleet Services crew of their conquests.

“The banners are there as a reminder of how good this staff is,” said Mr. Condran, “of how well we have done.”
