Dateline Compton — In a deadly serious turn of events, young Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvan, a Latino, stands accused of publicly and loudly referring to Compton’s black mayor by the n-word. A prominent woman who heard the obscene explosion revealed she has been receiving “threatening calls,” interpreted as “death threats.”

At a news conference this morning in front of Compton City Hall, black community activist Najee Ali went public with a bevy of verbal-violation charges against first-term Councilman Galvan.

He is identified as the first Hispanic Council member in this historically black community.

After unloading the accusations, the always-dapper Mr. Ali said he was demanding an apology. Failing that, he indicated he would seek the resignation of the rising star Mr. Galvan.

Mr. Ali and like-minded persons were expected to storm into this afternoon’s 5 o’clock City Council meeting to confront the accused.

According to Mr. Ali, who learned of the race-laced scene a week ago, here is how events unfolded at Brien O’Conner’s restaurant, Lakewood.

  • At a glasses-clinking reception for John Allen, newly elected director of the District 3 Water Replenishment Board, a year and a half ago, “booze flowed freely,” and so did Mr. Galvan’s alleged opinions. Mr. Ali said Mr. Galvan not only referred to young Mayor Aja Brown by the n-word, he labeled black colleagues on the City Council “monkeys.”
  • Further, he used a highly derogatory lifestyle term when alluding to state Sen. Isadore Hall.

Not for the first time, attempts to contact Mr. Galvan were fruitless this afternoon. His liaison, Sergio Calderon, reported present at the reception, has two contact numbers. Calls to both went unanswered and unreturned.

This may be a fresh chapter in the simmering black-brown cultural clash that is perceived as resentment-fueled and strictly one-sided, driven by an allegedly small segment of Compton Latinos.

In recent years, Compton’s traditionally black majority population has been strongly overtaken. Compton is described as 40 percent black, 56 percent Latino.
