Lady Centaurs Post-Season Basketball Run Starts Saturday

The Culver City High School girls soccer team started their CIF playoff run in La Mirada.

On Saturday evening at 7, the girls basketball team will host the first round of the CIF playoffs Saturday, playing Quartz Hill in the Del Goodyear gym. 

For other Lady Centaur athletes, momentum has been established.

The girls water polo team won their first round Division 6 playoff game, beating Tahquitz High School of Hemet, 18-7.  This afternoon, they were in Cypress, playing the winners of the Empire League.

The soccer team finished the regular season 12-7-2. They went 6-4 in the Ocean League, good for third place.

In La Mirada today they are challenging  one of the best teams in Southern California. The Matadors, unbeaten at 12-0 in the Suburban League, were 21-1 overall. 

Sophomore sensation Amanda Jaramillo who has scored 16 goals  while dishing out 11 assists, leads the Lady Centaurs.  Melissa Ramirez, Ashley Dorsey, Isabella Avincola, Isabel Deharo, Jasmine Flores and Jasmine Herrera have had strong seasons. 

“The players are getting over injuries,” said Coach Scott Mair. “They are healthy, and they seem to be peaking at the right time,”

For the fourth straight year, the Lady Centaurs basketball team was a perfect 10-0 in the Ocean League. finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-9 and a prefect 10-0 mark in the Ocean League.  The defending CIF 3AA champions under Coach Julian Anderson were 17-9 for the season.

Because of their past success the Lady Centaurs were moved up to a more competitive 1AA division this year, the second highest level.

 “This is the first time since I have been at Culver City that we have been placed in a top division,” said Anderson, who is in his fifth season. 

Regardless of where they are playing, i Anderson believes the Lady Centaurs are ready. “We have most of our players back from injuries,” he said. “We feel confident.

“All of the 1AA teams are well coached, and they play competitive teams.  s Quartz Hill will be ready.”

Kailey Tooke, Katie Lin, Lindsey Tanita and Gwendolyn Machado are Culver City’s strongest hopes.
