Ari L. NoonanNews

The formerly flying Culver City profile of the failed investment house Lehman Brothers remains well shielded in the shadows this afternoon.

Lehman Brothers is listed as the majority owner of latest incarnation of The Culver Studios, one of this town’s most visible employers.

My OpinionNews

[Editor’s Note: The latest attempt by citizens of the Culver Crest area to influence what they call “responsible drilling” in the Inglewood oil field — before government regulations are finalized — is the petition presented below. The petition is being circulated under the signature of community activist Suzanne De Benedittis, a former Catholic nun with a Ph.D in social ethics and social change. The final public hearing on regulations will be convened by the County Regional Planning Commission on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 9 a.m., in downtown Los Angeles, 320 W. Temple St., Room 150.]

Ari L. NoonanNews

What looked like a barnburner of a City Council meeting tonight in Council Chambers fizzled late Friday afternoon and evaporated.

In the face of strongly organized opposition, the developer Sal Gonzales has asked for a five-week delay in a public hearing to air an appeal of approval of the latest controversial development in a residential neighborhood.

Commissioners Grant a Major Victory to Residents on Oil Drilling

Ari L. NoonanNews

To the pleasant surprise of a virtual army of sophisticated oil drilling activists from the Culver Crest area, the County Regional Planning Commission rewarded their extraordinary, summer-long persistence late Wednesday afternoon by granting their fondest but most elusive wish:

More time to study and to comment on the ever-changing Community Standards District document that is intended to regulate strongly increased drilling in the 2-mile long Inglewood oil field for the next 20 years.

Passion Is Missing When Council Passes Smoking Ban in Outdoor Dining Areas

Ari L. NoonanNews

By this stage of a fast-moving century, debates over smoking bans can sound almost as archaic as a family arguing whether it should replace the kerosene lamps with electricity in every room of the house.

Utilizing about three fewer words than it took Tolstoy to complete War and Peace, the City Council last night unanimously approved a smoking ban in all outdoor dining areas, exempting bar patios.

Councilman Andy Weissman may have captured the tone of the prospective law:

Ridley-Thomas Lashes Once Again at Parks’ MTA-Linked Donors

Garth SandersNews

While state Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Culver City) was kicking off his campaign with hundreds of volunteers on Saturday, “all the Bernard Parks campaign could do was issue another snarky press release and dodge questions about his long string of ethical lapses,” the senator’s camp charged yesterday.

“Instead of Mr. Parks, a Metropolitan Transit Authority board member, returning more than $20,000 in contributions from MTA contractors – which is what his constituents have demanded – he has asked for a list of those contributions.”

Smoking Ban in Outdoor Dining Areas on Tonight’s Council Agenda

Ari L. NoonanNews

The City Council’s relatively slow motion ending to a quiet summer season comes this evening at 7 in Council Chambers at City Hall when a smoking ban in outdoor dining areas is expected to be placed on a road to victory.

Although opponents testified in July that a formal ordinance was unnecessary because the incidence of smoking is nil at Culver City restaurants, the prospective law has been pushed forward.

Dr. Colisimo Found Dead This Morning

Ari L. NoonanNews

Friends were shocked upon learning that Dr. George Colisimo, the volunteer football team physician at Culver City High School for a dozen years or more, had been found dead this morning at his home in Westchester.

He was 58 years old.

Dr. Colisimo talked to his mother, Rose, every morning. When she had not heard from him, and the doctor had not yet reported to his office, son Charles was dispatched to his father’s home, friends said.
