Reflections on Lench Ahead of Memorial Program

My OpinionNews

[Editor’s Note: A former student at West Los Angeles College and a close friend of the late board member Bob Lench, Dr. Chong dispatched the following notice to a wide circle of persons regarding the first service since his death. Dr. Chong will share memories of Mr. Lench in Friday’s edition.]

Hello Amazing People!

I have good news. “Grandpa” Bob Lench’s Celebration will be at West Los Angeles College on Monday at 12 noon.

Dr. Mark Rocha, President of West, has asked me to organize every detail of it. It will be a 30-minute program with food.

Please forward this information to anyone you know who may know Bob.

Let’s be the “connectors” (referring to Tipping Point) of this small world because someone you know may know him or know someone else who may.

Keep in mind that he has lived a long and full life taking random people to lunch.

He has worked hard to make a lot of money to donate it to causes in which he believes in: promoting social justice and equality, and in trying to eradicate the economic inequalities. He has helped the lives of many..

You may not know Bob personally.

But wouldn’t you be excited if you got invited to Mother Teresa’s service although you have never met her?

That’s how I feel about Bob.

Albert Vera, former mayor of Culver City and West L.A. College Foundation board member, has agreed to donate the food.

I spoke with the student government at West L.A. College, and they have agreed to purchase a beautiful floral arrangement for him as well as pay for a professional photographer to take pictures.

What you can do:

  • Bring flowers
  • Bring candles

  • Bring your checkbook to expand his already existing Bob Lench Scholarship at West. The student government has agreed to collect donations on his behalf.

  • Tell people about this event

  • Find me someone with a good voice to sing Mariah Carey’s song “Hero” and “One Sweet Day”

  • Help me find a wonderful Buddhist monk who can chant at the service.

  • Send me all pictures of Bob ASAP via e-mail.

  • Just be there and say a prayer/chant for him.

I have already contacted a few of his friends from the Santa Monica Airport where he has his airplane, the Culver City Chamber of Commerce, the Brentwood Country Club, and the news also will be presented to Upward Bound, where Bob is also a board member.
