Warning to Parents, Students

Ari L. NoonanOP-ED

Please be advised that Culver City Unified School District schools will be in session on May 1, and that it will be a regular business day. Our job as educators is to always promote responsible behavior and to maintain the safety of our students and staff. We encourage students to voice their concerns and participate in appropriate classroom discussion and debate about these issues. These are issues that impact our community, our state and our nation. But  we discourage activities that jeopardize the safety of students or interrupt the education process.

As parents, it is important for you to remember that there are consequences whenever a student leaves class or campus without permission. As with any unexcused absence, Culver  City High School will take disciplinary action against any student for cutting school. These unexcused absences will count against students when considering their eligibility for work permits and to participate in such events as prom, Grad Night and Disneyland. For students who already have unexcused absences this school year, the additional absence could lead to he or she being classified as a “habitual truant.”

CCUSD is proud of the many ways in which it offers its students the opportunity for freedom of  expression on campus and urges students to explore these avenues instead of leaving campus. We remind parents and students that our teachers and  administrators have an open-door policy and  are lways willing to work with students to express their views.

I hope you will stress to your child or children the importance of remaining on campus and expressing their opinions in a safe and productive manner.

As you know, your child’s educational success is a joint responsibility between you and the school, with each of us doing everything possible to ensure that our students have an outstanding learning experience that will prepare them for the future.

Thank you for ensuring that attendance at school is a high priority at this time and throughout the school year.

Sincerely,

Pam Magee,
