Re: “We Were ‘Wrong’ Before We Started – Burke”

Anne Burke is proud that she was involved in the formation of United Parents of Culver City three years ago. However, she did not realize that three years later her role would be seen as a parochial negative on her resume as a School Board candidate

Her UPCC association established “permanent resentment” with certain influential members of the Culver City Democratic Club, she said, apparently because UPCC candidates defeated Dem Club choices in the 2013 School Board race.

“I even mentioned in the opening of my speech at the Dem Club,” said Ms. Burke, “that part of my involvement was with the bond committee because of my association with the UPCC.”

Ms. Burke and Scott McVarish, her running mate who also is closely identified with the UPCC, both believe their UPCC ties were the main reason they were denied endorsements two weeks ago when they were invited to make presentations to the Dem Club. There is a consensus that the non-endorsements were preordained.

Not incidentally, the two UPCC stalwarts are registered Democrats.

Conversely, one question the value of a Dem Club endorsement after its most recent double setback.

Ms. Burke, Mr. McVarish and Prof.  Kelly Kent – the entire cast for the School Board election of Nov. 3 — next will meet on Thursday morning at 8 before a Chamber of Commerce audience at the Sheraton 4 Points.
