White to County Commission – County Supervisors have appointed Fire Chief David White to the Emergency Medical Services Commission.  The Los Angeles Area Fire Chiefs Assn. recommended Chief White to serve as their representative on the Commission. The EMS Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors and the Director of Health Services regarding County policies, programs, and standards for EMS throughout the County.

SAVE Program – The Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency (SAVE) program aims to provide immediate short-term support in the aftermath of a fire or other natural disaster to displaced victims. The SAVE program is funded through the California Fire Foundation and allows the Fire Dept. to provide gift cards to eligible victims of fires or other natural disasters so they may purchase basic necessities such as food, clothing or medicine.

Firefighters care about their community and are committed to protecting families, before, during and after the fire is out.

 

Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Dept.

Award of Excellence — The Culver City Senior Citizens Assn. has been selected as a  California Park & Recreation Society Service Award of Excellence Champion of the Community recipient. This recognizes individuals or organizations who have contributed significant effort to improve the quality of their community through parks and recreation. This is the second consecutive year that Culver City and partners are being recognized by the state professional association.

After School Recreation – Staff for the After School Recreation program will attend the School District’s Kindergarten Night Orientation for next year’s class of students and parents.  Staff will meet parents at the elementary school and answer questions about the program.  Registration begins in July.

Teen Center – In collaboration with the Rotary Club and the Culver-Palms YMCA, the Teen Center will host the second annual Culver City Healthy Family 5K Run/Walk at West Los Angeles College on Sunday, April 3.  Signups start shortly.

Outreach Plan – Plunge staff created and implemented a Recreation Swim Outreach Plan for 2015-2016, with the goal of increasing access to a comprehensive recreation swim program for residents of Culver City.  Staff worked with key groups in Culver City and the surrounding area, including non-profit organizations, children’s groups, and groups that work with the senior population.  The plan included distributing recreation swim passes to community groups, including the PTA organizations and provided free recreational swimming for up to a family of four per pass for May 25 – Sept. 27 last year. One hundred and seventy passes were redeemed at the Plunge.  Four hundred youth, adults and seniors visited the Plunge thanks to this marketing promotion.

Rental Operation – The Vets Auditorium will be the site of Valentine’s Day events and private parties.  Call 310.253.6625 or vmc.booking@culvercity.org for room reservations.  New window shades have been installed in the Garden Room, and a second projector has been purchased to better serve  renters and program users.

 

Police Dept.

Homeless Census – Sgts. Pete Hernandez and Gary Irwin along with Det. James Cendrowski, all took part in the Culver City Homeless Census.  This is part of the annual greater Los Angeles County Homeless Census. The city was divided into 13 census districts, and 55 volunteers participated.  This was a visual census. Volunteers did not contact the people directly but counted the homeless they saw sleeping on the street, in their cars and other vehicles.

 

Public Works Dept.

Construction Updates:

Golden State Water Co. is working on Orville Street, Janisann Avenue, McDonald Street, and on the east and west sides of Sawtelle Boulevard installing new water main replacement pipe, working from 8 to 5.

Golden State is working on Wesley Street between National Boulevard and Higuera Street, installing a new water main replacement pipe, between 8 and 5.

The Gas Company is working on Sawtelle Boulevard between Culver and Washington Boulevards, installing a new gas main replacement pipe. Traffic control is set up between 9 and 3.

The Gas Company is working on Higuera Street between Hayden and Lucerne Avenues installing a new gas main replacement pipe. The working hours are from 8 to 5.

The Gas Company is working on Sherbourne Drive from the cul-de-sac to across Washington Boulevard installing a new gas main replacement pipe.
