Culver City High School was well represented during the annual West L.A. Baseball Classic last Saturday at West Los Angeles College.

Three seniors, Eli Saucedo, Max Sterner and Justin Weiner, played on the winning team. Team Trujillo defeated Team Fuller 12-10.

Teams were named after their head coaches, Angel Trujillo of Locke and Eric Fuller of Bishop Montgomery.

“It’s the same great game every year,” said game director Carlos Rojas.

“We are having a lot of fun with this game, he said while emphasizing that a huge number of schools are represented.

Mr. Rojas spoke about one major change.

“Instead of having the players wear all-star uniforms, we wanted them to wear their high school uniforms.

“Look out on the field,” he said, “and  you see a lot of different colors. That is  awesome.”

Players from all over Los Angeles and the South Bay — 23 different high schools – participated.

“It is so important to recognize these outstanding young men one final time before they head off to college,” said Mr. Rojas.

For the second year in a row Dorsey High Coach Pete Dobson has been on the West L.A. Classic staff.

Coach Dobson is one of the best inner city baseball coaches in the nation. He has guided Dorsey to a city championship.

Coach Dobson has a gleam in his eyes when talks about the West L.A. All-Star Classic.

“This game gives the kids a chance to play high school baseball one more time,” he said.

Coach Dobson said the Classic is important because “it brings together players, coaches and families.

“It gives us the opportunity to meet different people from different backgrounds and different cities.”

Coach Dobson hopes he is here to stay. “As long as they invite me,” he said, “I will come back.”
