Most Culver City High School students are going to the beach, vacationing or relaxing, getting ready for fall classes.

If you are playing football, you are running, lifting weights to prepare for the season. It is that time of year.
For the Centaur football players, their next passing league game will be Thursday at 5 o’clock against Verbum Dei.

“We are progressing nicely,” says Coach Jahmal Wright. “The players and the coaches are working hard. Our players are getting stronger every day. We have to deal with a few injuries, but we will be okay.”

Last year’s starting quarterbacks, junior Jonathan Martin and senior Bryce Lewis-Wolfe, are back.

They are working on being more consistent, assistant coach Greg Goodyear said.

“The good thing about the quarterback situation is that we have good receivers,” said Goodyear. “They are not as tall as past year’s receivers. But they may be faster.”

Senior Justin Cox, a receiver/defensive back, will be one of the best in the Ocean League. “We are expecting big things from Justin,” said Wright. “This is his third year on the varsity. He is ready to take on a leadership role.”

Goodyear likes what he sees. “We are ahead of last year. We still are a work in progress. We need to keep improving.”
