West L.A. Baseball Progressing

Baseball is not the only important focus this spring at West Los Angeles College.  Coaches are teaching the players life lessons.

That is where autism awareness becomes visible. Before, during and after Saturday’s 1 o’clock game against Antelope Valley, there will be activities for all ages.

“We want to make sure our players realize how fortunate they are just to walk and talk on a normal level,” said assistant coach Carlos Rojas.

“We expect a big crowd and an appearance by Hiccups the Clown.  Information about autism and other diseases will be readily available. “

At 10-17, West L.A. College’s baseball program is on the rise. They still are a distance from becoming an elite program.

“We want to get support for our baseball program,” Rojas said. “This ship is turning around.”

Trying to end the season as winners, the Wildcats have three home games left and seven overall.

“We are asking our players to dig deep,” said Rojas. “Our energy level has to be better. The overall direction of the program, though, is tremendous.”

For assistant coach Roger Hill, concentration is the issue. “Retention has to be better,” he said. “They have to maintain focus.  To play this game you must make adjustments. I want the players to feel good about themselves. “It’s not how you start, I tell them. It is how you finish.”

After Saturday, West L.A. College’s next home game will be next Thursday against Citrus at 2:30. Thursday, April 28, is the 2:30 home finale with Glendale.
