A Jewel Is Born on a Summer Night

Summer McBride with her youngest children

Based on her broad and deep responses Tuesday night, Summer McBride may be the most qualified person to join the School Board since Eve and Adam became homeowners the other millenium in a garden called Eden.

To be clear – before being less clear:

Based mainly at El Rincon Elementary, this remarkable mother of five not only has children in three different schools, she spends more time on campus than all the classroom desks cumulatively.

She is smarter than the dictionary.

Because of her congenial personality, her unshakeable commitment to parental involvement in schools, her voluminous knowledge of the School District, she is more popular than oxygen with the school crowd.

The other 15 candidates could have skipped the meeting the night the School Board was going to appoint an applicant to fill out the last 20 months of resigned Sue Robins’s tern.  They should have dined at home on dusty sardines and overheated ice cubes.

This was a Summer Night if there ever was one.

Long before the meeting, reports by disparate sources circulated throughout the District that the worthy Mrs. McBride was going to be the next School Board member.

Two women interested in applying when they heard of Ms. Robins’s resignation, told the newspaper they promptly executed a U-turn when they heard the (likely) outcome already was in the can.

Inevitably, there was much talk at the meeting about discrimination since El Rincon has not been represented on the Board for years and Mrs. McBride is the third black member in School Board history.

Sad because Mrs. McBride’s sterling credentials and presentation manner are double-decker powerhouses.

Her talents would bust the resistance of any bigot, liberal or conservative.
