The most fascinating dimension of Police Chief Scott Bixby’s presentation this evening will be  the audience.

How will they react?

Predictably, favorably (to his message) and worriedly (about their future).

At 6 o’clock in Council Chambers, responding to a request from City Councilperson Meghan Sahli-Wells, Mr. Bixby will reiterate The Statement.

He will expound on the Police Dept. view of illegal immigrants that he has been declaring daily since Nov. 25.

That was when he issued a latter- day proclamation of relative emancipation for illegal immigrants.

With Culver City on the verge of officially becoming a sanctuary city in 12 days, Mr. Bixby’s unsurprising words will be parsed, fried, baked, recooked and intimately x-rayed.

“Nothing has changed since I put the letter out awhile back,” said Mr. Bixby, not for the fourth, fifth or even 500th time.

“We are not the immigration police,” he said. “That is not one of our primary functions.

“I have not been contacted by any federal entity to assist them.

“The bottom line, the theme (tonight) will be:

“We are going to follow the law.

“Whatever that may be. If sanctuary city comes up, that is a topic for the City Council, not for me.

“We really don’t take part in immigration enforcement.

“If we get a civil detainer request from ICE, we do not honor it,” Mr. Bixby said.

“If we get a judicial detainer, which is the same as a warrant, then, of course, we are going to honor it.

“Those are rare, though, in my experience,” said Mr. Bixby.
