A new policy looms for police in Culver City

Second in a series

Re “Prop. 64 to Bring New Police Approach

The nearly impossible city-by-city chore of supervising/governing/chasing the production/consumption of now-legal marijuana hands every local California police agency an impossible assignment.

This is the most unmanageable, distasteful task officers have faced since some were told a few decades ago to root out unpopular sexual activities in private bedrooms.

Whose job will it be to oversee/overhear if any homeowner is exceeding the limit of growing six plants per household?

Culver City police Lt. Manny Cid said last week because of the many complex avenues involved in each municipality overseeing the undoubted personal and commercial explosion of marijuana, police policy necessarily will change.

Officers will become reactive instead of pro-active.

“The new law kind of takes away what we could be pro-active with,” Lt. Cid said.

Officers are not going in alone against suspected lawbreakers. “Some of this ultimately will be the primary responsibility of (City Hall-based) Code Enforcement,” he said. “Obviously, we are going to work in collaboration with them. But it will be reactive in the sense we are going to work in assisting them.”

But the Police Dept. will not lean back on its haunches.

“If there is any aspect where we can be pro-active,” said Lt. Cid, “we will.”
