The most progressive member of the City Council, Meghan Sahli-Wells, believes her hometown should follow the lead of the Los Angeles City Council and the County Board of Supervisors by adopting the same incremental $15 minimum wage standard.

One reason is that more Culver City residents are steamed about the latest rage, mansionization, perceived overbuilding, than they are about the minimum wage.

C’est la vie.

That is life in generally upscale Culver City.

Ms. Sahli-Wells framed the matter more poignantly.

“I would like to see the minimum wage changed,” the Councilwoman said this morning. “But for that to happen, it needs to be the will of the people.

“The Planning Commission just had a meeting (last night), and the house was packed.

“As of today, nobody has come to the City Council saying, ‘Hey, raise the minimum wage.’

“If they do come to the Council, that will start the process in motion,” Ms. Sahli-Wells said.

“In my view, this is not an issue that is going to come from the top down. It must come from the bottom up.

“This is what happened in Los Angeles and in L.A. County.

“We will need Culver City residents and businesses saying, ‘Hey, we must have a $15 minimum wage in our city. Let’s do this.’

“One Council member alone cannot do it,” Ms. Sahli-Wells said.
